MTH 465: Statistical Measurement in Sports: RELIABILITY and VALIDITY

A guide to common terms introduced in a typical statistics or research methods course.

Validity and Reliability Defined

When selecting a test for research, two important concepts are:

• Validity: extent to which a test measures what it was designed to measure*
• Reliability: consistency, dependability, and reproducibility of test scores*

Reliability and validity are concepts used to evaluate the quality of research. They indicate how well a method, technique or test measures something. Reliability is about the consistency of a measure, and validity is about the accuracy of a measure.
